

It’s a classic Hollywood cookie-cutter: Everything’s for the girl. However, the film warps that message by depicting the main character as a kid who just wants a girlfriend. In Seuss’ book, the then unnamed boy wanted to grow a tree in order to save the environment and create a better future (or so it is implied).

While this new concept to the story does help fill the extra hour the movie needed to make up, it ruined the book’s original purpose. In an effort to make an impression on Audrey, Ted must find the one thing she most desires in the world: a real tree. Seuss’ birth name (Theodore Seuss Giesel), and Audrey is the name of Seuss’ widow. Fun fact: a sentimental touch, Ted was named after Dr. Wiggins’ goal throughout the film is to impress the older Audrey. Ted is supposed to be a 12-year-old boy but Efron’s voice makes him sound like he’s 20 it’s just one of the film’s many poor casting choices. Soon we’re introduced to the film’s main character, Ted. Unfortunately, the company name “O’Hare Air” is about as close to Dr. O’Hare (Voiced by Rob Riggle) bottles and sells the air that the town breathes in every day. Right out of the gate, the film begins in the Candyland-looking Thneedville, where even the trees are plastic. Six months later, I now know just how much of a sell-out “The Lorax” really is. From that moment on, I dreaded the movie’s release. However, when researching how to properly spell “Truffula”, I noticed that Universal Studios was planning to make a feature-length Lorax movie. Seuss books with my grandmother, and I was actually excited to write an essay on it.

The film brought back some wonderful memories of reading Dr. “The Lorax” had all of those scenes and much, much more.īack in September, my AP Environmental Science class watched the original 1972 version of “The Lorax”. I mean, it’s not like there were scenes featuring a grandma snowboarding or a “Mission Impossible” reference or a Once-ler guitar riff. But this is one worth seeing, and will be enjoyed by everyone from the youngest of Seuess fans to the very oldest.Have you ever felt like your innocence is being ground into dust right before your eyes? Like when your mom threw away your favorite childhood toy, or when you caught a long-time friend smoking? That’s how I felt when I saw “Dr. I left the theater feeling satisfied and proud that one of my favorite Seuess stories was done justice on the big screen, as so many animated films don't deliver. Fans of the book shouldn't be disappointed, I certainly wasn't. It is by no means a direct adaptation, but keeps the key plot elements while remaining a modern-day animated kids movie. The main thing about the movie though, is that it follows the book loosely.

Another bright spot in the film is the musical numbers, the songs are catchy and creative and add a nice spice to the movie. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the animation is excellent. The first thing you'll notice about this film is the animation. The newest Seuss book to be adapted to film happens to be one of the great author's works that I enjoyed the most growing up, the Lorax. Instead, go in with and open mind and prepare to be entertained.
